Green Crystals: Healing and Balance

Those of us who don't live in tropical or eternally moderate climates reach a point during the winter when we long for the color green. (For me, this longing starts in late November.) We want to feel soft, springy grass beneath our feet and see the trees cloaked in lush, green leaves.

Our heartfelt desire for greenness is very natural. Green, among its other properties, is the color of healing and balance, and this is one of the reasons it is associated with the fourth (heart) choker.

While balance is the key to the powerful functioning of all the chakras, balance itself is a primary function of the heart choker. Situated between the three lower and three upper chakras, its task is to blend the primal energies of physical connection, emotional connection, and connection to personal power with the mental and spiritual energies of the upper chakras. This keeps us from becoming either fixated on physical existence as the only reality or from wishing we were anywhere but in our bodies.

The heart also balances the polarities of masculine and feminine we experience within ourselves. It teaches us how to add the element of compassion to our exercise of will, how to balance aggression and receptivity, how to be both firm and nurturing, and to identify our own needs with those of others. With a balanced fourth chakra, we learn to experience the peace which rises from self-acceptance, the inner harmony which stems from self love.

The Elements of Green

When we long for the color green, we are seeking more than visual refreshment. Green is a blend of yellow, a lower-chakra color, which represents personal power, self-esteem, and the drive to accomplish, with the primarily mental energies of the color blue. Light blue relates to communication with others, while dark blue is associated with psychic communication, and the connection with one's inner self.

In a sense, green symbolizes a balance between action focused on the outer world and the more contemplative modes of both verbal and nonverbal communication. In general, green is a color which symbolizes new life, growth, and regeneration. Based on these qualities, it is also related to healing, on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Abundance is related to growth, and is a form of health in that having that which you desire and have worked/prayed/meditated to have creates balance and satisfaction, two conditions which are a necessary part of health and well being.

The relationship of creativity to the color green is connected to the ability not only to have interesting ideas, but to plant and harvest them. In essence, the fourth-chakra expression of creativity is one of nurturing.

(Note: In general, green stones belong on the heart chakra, but there are some exceptions among the stones below.)

Emerald: The Healer

Emeralds relate to the planet Venus (which rules the astrological sign of Taurus). Venus symbolizes both earthly and divine love, and Emerald vibrates to the energy of divine love.

It is for this reason that emerald is one of the most powerful manifesting crystals. Everything physical is created from nonphysical source energy. When our channel to spirit is open, we are able to direct and focus that energy in order to in all ways enrich our experience of physical existence.

When we are in the presence of this energy, our physical beings are connected to the nonphysical aspects of ourselves, and thus to Spirit. This is the most fundamental way in which we as earth beings need to be balanced: so that we can can experience ourselves as spiritual entities rejoice in our visits to the physical plane.

In meditation, emerald is most appropriately placed on the heart center. A good companion for it in this location is rose quartz, which can help to channel the source energy into appreciation for oneself as both a spiritual and physical being.

Aventurine

This stone is considered the all-purpose, meaning that it can assist with healing on all levels. I've found its soothing qualities especially useful for emotional healing and balance. It is also very helpful for stress. Because of aventurine's ability to dissolve blockages, it works well with stones which surface blockages but don't dissolve them, such as malachite, lapis, and obsidian.

aventurine sphere

Although I can't legally recommend any crystal for physical healing, I have found aventurine to be very helpful with lower back pain. When this occurs, I tape several aventurines on the affected area before going to sleep.

(Any crystal can be taped to the body. If you like this idea do be sure to buy the special tape that pulls off the skin without causing suffering.)

Aventurine also heals on the emotional level. It's especially helpful when worn for this purpose or placed on the heart center during choker balancing). It helps to balance the emotions, and is one of the best stones to wear or carry during stressful periods. It can also be used in crystal layouts when stress is internalized in the solar plexus area.

This crystal will also soften the energy of seemingly harsher stones, such as malachite, which tends to surface but not dissolve emotional blockages. Combining aventurine and malachite on the solar plexus helps to more effectively release and dissolve emotional blockages.

Green Calcite

This is my favorite green stone, and I have several pieces of it. Its energy is soft and healing; thus, its soothing qualities can be particularly helpful in releasing limiting beliefs based on fear. To release the fear often associated with limiting beliefs, place it on the heart center.

It also helps to release mental rigidity, which can prevent us from opening to new beliefs and realities. Mental rigidity often gives rise to physical rigidity, stiffness, and tension, and people have reported that green calcite has helped to relieve these conditions. When you're working on releasing old mental patterns it's best placed on the third eye (above and between the other two; this is also known as the sixth choker).

A third use for green calcite is to release an excess of red energy: anger or over-excitement. To neutralize excessive red energy it can be placed wherever you're experiencing anger or over-stimulation (often the heart or solar plexus). If you're experiencing these sensations in your entire body/psyche place green calcite on the second choker (the pelvic area, which is traditionally related to the color red).

Green Tourmaline

This stone's particular gift is its ability to help purify and strengthen the nervous system so that it can circulate increased spiritual energy. In my experience, it can help one to handle increased levels of any kind of energy. Thus, if your creative levels are high, and need to be focused, green tourmaline is an excellent stone to work with. Many people relate this stone to abundance, as well.

Green tourmaline is believed to be a healer on all level. It is used to purify and strengthen the nervous system so that it can circulate increased spiritual energy. Many people use, carry, or wear it to relieve chronic exhaustion.

Malachite-Chrysocolla

The combination of green malachite and blue chrysocolla in this stone makes it a wonderful bridge between the solar plexus and throat. Malachite's gift of bringing emotional negativity to the surface is softened by the calming and soothing energies of chrysocolla, a crystal especially known for its ability to ease fear, anxiety, and guilty, and to gently release emotions. This combination makes malachite-chrysocolla one of the easiest ways to release emotional blockages.

Creative expression in its deepest sense is an emotional outpouring. Each person's way of expressing themselves is unique. In addition, both malachite and chrysocolla are associated with creativity. Malachite, in its surfacing role, allows one to become present to creative impulses. Chrysocollla helps to release the fear of creative expression so that the process of creative expression flows smoothly.

This versatile stone can be placed wherever you feel you have an energy blockage. While it is especially effective on the throat and solar plexus, when placed on the heart, it bridges these two energy centers. It is especially effective on the throat, solar plexus, and throat. In meditating you may wish to imagine your body/spirit filled with its soothing colors - as if perhaps you were afloat in a beautiful tropical sea.

Related Essences

Although we don't make direct recommendations regarding physical healing, Rescue Remedy (Bach) is an all-purpose essence which has given healing to many in the human and animal worlds. I have revived stunned birds and helped to ease the anxiety of frightened cats with Rescue Remedy. If you are feeling uncertain, frightened, or in shock, Rescue Remedy can bring balance to your heart and rest of your being.

Scleranthus (Bach), generally recommended for bringing opposites into harmony, can assist in the balancing functions of the fourth choker.

Self-Heal (FES) can be invaluable in strengthening one's commitment to healing. Many practitioners also find that this essence helps to activate the energies of other essences.

Two Wild Earth Animal Essences directly connected to healing are Bear and Frog.

Bear symbolizes finding healing by going within. When our worlds seem dark and confused, when our physical senses and reason and logic fail us, when there seems to be no path to follow, we go within to find our deepest resources, and the light of intuition and inner knowing helps us to find our way home.

Frog is believed to call the rains when they are needed. Water cleanses and replenishes the earth, and in terms of healing this animal's medicine can help when our lives feel dry and dull, when we feel mired in the mud of circumstances, or when we have allowed emotional toxins to poison our outlook on life.
