Buffalo:
Prayer and Abundance

The story of the White Buffalo Woman comes from the Lakota people. She taught them that all things are connected and that it is not necessary to struggle to have abundance. What is necessary, however, is to be connected to Spirit.

Buffalo's relationship to the native people of the United States illustrates these lessons. Every part of this animal was used, right down to the hooves, which were utilized for making glue. This is one lesson of abundance: to use whatever resources are available.

In a deeper sense this lesson is also to appreciate what one already has. How often do we focus on what is lacking, instead of the blessings which fill our lives? How much richer are our lives when we give thanks for what we have? This is a powerful way to pray.

Our attitude towards our connectedness to all beings can also be a form of prayer. When we recognize that we are part of a One, each unique, each necessary for the whole, we recognize that abundance (which can refer to health, happiness, friendships, and much more) does not have to come from our individual striving. When we are open to receive, miracles can come from the most unexpected sources.

Buffalo teaches us how to learn to stop focusing on problems and difficulties and to concentrate instead on how much we have and on how rich we are in terms of our connectedness to all of life.

Buffalo is one of the Wild Earth Animal Essences. Buffalo images are available in power stones.
