The ideas below, common to Western medicine, can cause difficulties for those who want to explore Reiki.
Reiki operates within a different set of premises.
Reiki doesn't focus on physical healing alone (although physical healing often results from treatments). It's based on the belief (shared by other disciplines in the field called vibrational healing) that health on mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical levels is caused by the free flow of energy. When energy is blocked imbalances result.
Stress, for example, is often caused by the mind being burdened by worry. Worry involves thoughts (I have so much to do; how will I ever get it all done) which create an impasse or blockage (I can't), with accompanying feelings (the sensation of fear, panic, etc.) which produce emotional blockages. These can lead to bodily tightening and tension, which can create the conditions for pain and/or illness. Medical, surgical, or pharmaceutical solutions may relieve the physical symptoms, but they or a new set of symptoms will occur if the basic imbalance remains.
Reiki treatments don't focus specifically on relieving symptoms (although, again they are often relieved), but on dissolving the blockages so that energy can flow to rebalance the individual on all levels. The Reiki symbols can be used to accelerate this process.
The power symbol amplifies the energy flow; the mental/emotional balance symbol relieves the pressure on burdened minds; the distant healing symbol, in addition to its many other uses, can send healing energy to past traumas and conflicts (I failed once, I'll fail again; I have to do well because it's always been expected of me) which, in the manner of a low-grade and chronic infection, provide the constant potential for imbalance.
In saying this we don't want to close out the possibility of immediate results. There have been many instances in which a single Reiki treatment had miraculous results. Imbalances, however, are often a lifetime in development, and though it takes much less than a lifetime to heal them the process isn't a quick fix.
This is one of the reasons why we focus on teaching Reiki. If you are working on dissolving long-term imbalances being able to give yourself daily (or more often) treatments is more cost-effective than going to a practitioner on a daily basis.
We also believe that regular self-treatment can also prevent imbalances and blockages from occurring. If you're going through a stressful period in life regular treatments can help to relax your body, mind, and emotions so that stress, rather than building up, diminishes. In addition, if you have worries about the future, you can use the distant healing symbol to send energy to create those conditions which you desire.
Another, related, reason why we focus on teaching Reiki is that we believe that we are the creators of our own health. Any practitioner can tell you that people respond differently to a given treatment. Much of this has to do with someone's willingness to be healed, including the willingness to take responsibility for one's healing and well-being.
To learn Reiki makes a material contribution to this willingness. We are then both affirming that we have the ability and the willingness to heal ourselves, and giving ourselves a simple yet powerful way of doing so.
We come into this world as whole and balanced beings. With Reiki we can restore the wholeness which is our birthright.
